VWAP: The Only Intraday Level That Matters

Every serious algo, prop desk, and institution watches VWAP. If you day-trade without it you are trading against people who don't.

Why VWAP is different

Regular moving averages weight every bar equally. VWAP weights each price by how much volume traded there. If 10 million shares change hands at $100 and 100k at $102, VWAP sits much closer to $100 — the price that mattered.

Institutions doing large orders are benchmarked against VWAP. Buying below it is a "good fill", selling above it is a "good fill". That single fact makes VWAP a magnet and a battleground.

The three trades

1. VWAP reclaim. Stock opens weak, sells off, then reclaims VWAP with a rising Relative Volume (RVOL > 1.5). Entry above the reclaim bar, stop below the intraday low. High-probability continuation trade.

2. VWAP rejection short. Stock rallies into VWAP from below on fading volume and rolls over. That's institutional supply hitting a benchmark. Short the failure, cover on a break of the recent swing low.

3. Bands mean-reversion. Overextended above the upper 2σ VWAP band on flat volume = mean-reversion setup. Only take it against clear resistance and only in range-bound days — trending days will keep going.

The RVOL filter

VWAP without volume context is a lie. On a low-volume day the level is thin and gets pierced constantly. Only trade VWAP signals when Relative Volume (today's volume vs the 20-day average at the same time) is above 1.3. Below that, real money isn't participating and the level breaks on noise.

How SIGNAL9 uses VWAP

The Day-Trade Scanner (Pro) filters the universe for names above or below VWAP with a specific RVOL floor, then ranks them by machine confluence. Every day-trade plan we generate has explicit VWAP-based entry and stop levels — the same reference the institutions on the other side of your trade are using.

FAQ

What is VWAP in simple terms?

Volume-Weighted Average Price — the average price a share traded at today, weighted by size. It's where the biggest players' average fill lives. Price above VWAP = buyers control the day; below VWAP = sellers control it.

Is VWAP better than moving averages for day trading?

For intraday, yes. Moving averages smooth past bars; VWAP anchors to today's actual volume distribution. A daily MA cross tells you about last month; a VWAP reclaim tells you the day's balance just flipped.

Can I use VWAP for swing trades?

Only anchored VWAP (aVWAP) — anchored to a specific event like earnings, an IPO, or a major low. Regular session VWAP resets daily and is meaningless overnight.
